From intern to employee

Alex’s story

When I think about it, I realize that Welcome Hall Mission has been there at many stages of my life!

When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to visit Welcome Hall Mission. I learned about what the organization was doing in Montreal.

Following this experience, a friend told me they had been an employee of Welcome Hall Mission and strongly advised and encouraged me to work here.

As part of my studies, I had to do an internship in a community setting, so I had the chance to see Welcome Hall Mission in action. After seeing what goes on behind the scenes, I genuinely wanted to be part of the team. A job opportunity presented itself, and I evolved over the years from intern to maintenance worker to counsellor.

Many emergency sites had to deploy to help people experiencing homelessness with the health crisis. I was trusted and was allowed to perform in leadership roles as I continued to grow. I feel that I have learned so much and continue to learn day by day.

"I was trusted (…) I continue to grow here. I feel that I have learned so much and continue to learn day by day."

From volunteer to employee

Gabriel’s story

As a trained chef in France, I soon realized that I was missing something in my role. I wanted a change in my life, and I came to Canada.

I discovered Welcome Hall Mission while I was studying theology. I met a classmate who worked at Welcome Hall Mission. During one conversation, he invited me to come and see the facilities and I accepted the invitation. That’s how I became a kitchen volunteer.

As a volunteer, I quickly saw how my talent could be used in a community setting. I understood how structured kitchen work could be a vehicle for positive change leading to social reintegration. The Welcome Hall Mission Micro Enterprise program grew from this idea. The program allows clients to learn kitchen trades in a loving and respectful environment.

In April 2014, after three years as a volunteer, I seized the opportunity to become chef of the Welcome Hall Mission kitchens. Since then, I have discovered a genuine appreciation for training others and how such know-how can transform lives.

From client to employee

Milena’s story

I arrived as the Covid-19 pandemic was hitting Quebec. As a newcomer to Canada, I received food support from Welcome Hall Mission and quickly realized the extent of the crisis we were all facing.

Seeing the many Montrealers who found themselves in difficulty overnight, I wanted to help with food distribution. I understood the importance of this support, being a client myself. That’s how I became a volunteer here. For months on end, rain or shine, I worked to help further Welcome Hall Mission’s aid and support operations.

Being a job seeker, I spoke up and made myself known in hopes of job opportunities becoming available internally. That’s how I got my foot in the door of the Quebec job market.

For two years now, I have worked for an organization that truly represents me and has stood by me through hard times. Welcome Hall Mission recognized my experience and knowledge and helped me join the Quebec job market. It was a tremendous professional opportunity that will help me in my future in Quebec.
